The Role: Global Coal Markets Senior Analyst

The Team: The Global Coal Markets Senior Analyst is a key member of the Global Power team as well as the Asia Pacific energy team in S&P Commodity Insights. The coal team interacts with many other groups such as oil, natural gas/LNG and power and will be responsible for producing reports research and analysis focused on coal markets but also as an input into broader energy outputs from the team...

The Impact: This position will have substantial responsibilities of research in elements affecting the international coal market (supply, demand, trade, and price), international power markets, and in presenting results in both written reports and client-facing interactions. The position will also have business development and client retention responsibilities in the Asia Pacific region. Critically the role will be responsible for presenting and coordinating the international coal view as it relates to all relevant internal energy markets.

Responsibilities:
  • Maintain, improve, and develop inputs and outputs for global coal markets analysis, working closely with other analytical staff within Platts.
  • Prepare written monthly, weekly, and ad hoc reports and forecasts.
  • Support Platts Analytics' wider organization, including Gas, Power and Emissions/Clean Energy.
  • Interact with clients and broader market perspectives to answer questions and present outlooks
What We're Looking For:
Basic Qualifications:
  • Minimum five years (or more) of experience in energy industry consulting, investment banking, equity research or equivalent professional experience, with a focus on coal markets.
  • Excellent English language communication skills. Must be able to effectively present forecasts and supporting materials to clients in regular reports, phone calls, emails, and web/live conferences.
  • Innovative and strong problem-solving skills to streamline processes and identify and implement improvements
  • Commercially-minded and great people skills for both internal and external interactions
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Proven ability to manage teams, process and outcomes and operate within a highly matrixed organisation.
  • Ability to assess impact of policy issues influencing coal markets
  • Expert in Microsoft Excel. At ease using features such as pivot tables, matrix formulas and other advanced Excel functionality.
  • Successful candidates will possess a strong entrepreneurial spirit, be highly self-directed and be able to work well under tight deadlines
  • Bachelor's degree, preferably in economics, engineering, or a similar field, with experience in energy markets. Advanced degrees a plus.
  • Asian language skills a plus due to coverage of Asia region
