We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Director, Sustainability Risk, Commercial Banking ASP.

Role Purpose

Reporting to the Regional Head of CMB Sustainability, the Sustainability Risk Commercial Banking ASP role is a key risk line of defense (FLOD) leadership position.

The role will create a sustainability risk management team to support CMB ASP and roll out and deploy the groups sustainability strategy. Key responsibilities will include:
  • Lead regulatory engagement and reporting on sustainability risk and governance
  • Focal point for interaction and liaison with front line RM's, businesses and risk & compliance on new policy development, transition risk client engagement and implementation for both financial and non-financial risk.
  • Work with multiple stakeholders in the region and globally to implement and operationalise the new policies via development into procedures and processes across ASP.
  • Set and monitor key risk and control indicators aligned to CMB global sustainability strategy and targets
  • Lead design and implementation of efficient and effective product, deal and transaction governance processes across the product areas
  • Provide subject matter expertise and coordination in embedding sustainability considerations into existing risk management frameworks (e.g. climate risk into Risk & Control Assessments)
  • Ensure holistic consideration of risks and controls through the client and product lifecycle to ensure compliance with policies and goals
  • Leadership in considering and planning for emerging risks as the agenda develops
  • Ensure comprehensive and actionable portfolio MI is available on financial risk exposures under the various ESG categories
  • Drive development and rollout of training and awareness for CMB staff on sustainability risks
  • Establish a clear timeline and roadmap for implementation of all material sustainability risk initiatives and policies, ensuring appropriate coordination and communication
  • Set the risk management systems and risk data agenda for ASP CMB Sustainability
Principal Accountabilities:

Impact on the Business / Function
  • Responsible for the evolution of Global scalable and standardized business practices to mitigate sustainability risk via implementation of new procedures and processes
  • Responsible for driving first line of defense ability across CMB to recognize sustainability risks and take appropriate action.
  • Implementation of governance processes to enable effective management oversight and challenge of sustainability risk
  • Responsible for the embedding Global KPIs that demonstrate improvements in sustainability risk management
  • Identify and raise awareness of emerging sustainability risk
Customers / Stakeholders
  • Provide subject matter guidance and support to CMB globally, regionally and country where needed
  • Drive awareness of sustainability risk and a risk culture across CMB via training/comms
  • Advocate risk management processes that ensure minimal impact on customer experience
Leadership and Teamwork
  • Lead an effective and professional team, driving up standards of knowledge, competency and skill within the team
  • Plan, priorities and allocate resource to achieve team objectives effectively
  • Secure appropriate funding to deliver team objectives
  • Manage compliance and risk counterparties in CMB sites to achieve objectives
Operational Effectiveness & Control
  • Uphold and enhance compliance and FCC risk culture in CMB
  • Maintain strict internal control
  • Protect the Bank and CMB from potential operational loss (tangible and reputational losses)
Major Challenges
  • Operate in an environment that is rapidly developing and does not have established structure or widespread knowledge/understanding
  • Be dynamic and positive to embrace increasing changes in internal and external industry, regulatory and compliance requirements in a nascent and fast moving risk discipline
  • To proactively safeguard and ensure the highest standard of sustainability risk management across all of the Global CMB franchise, whilst being sufficiently flexible to take consideration of local business and customer needs
  • To provide solid support and constructive advice to Senior Management in the management of complex sustainability risk issues
  • To possess strong interpersonal and communication skills to work with various internal partners, across the CMB franchise and different departments towards common goals
Role Context

The Sustainability Risk and Policy team is a new sub team created to support CMB Sustainability with managing sustainability risk in the FLOD. A number of new sustainability risk policies will be cascaded for the LOBs to implement and manage. In addition, given the groups move to achieve net zero by 2050 significant customer change will be needed to achieve this goal. Considerable investment and effort is required to implement and mature the CMB sustainability risk framework over the next 5 years. The creation of the Sustainability Risk team is the first step in this investment and will facilitate the implementation this work.

The job holder exercises high degree of autonomy to perform the responsibilities independently.

Management and Leadership of Regulatory, Compliance and Operational Risk

Demonstrate leadership on Regulatory & Compliance matters. Maintain awareness of operational risk and minimize the likelihood of it occurring including its identification, assessment, mitigation and control, loss identification and reporting in accordance with section B.1.2 of the Group Operations FIM.

Observation of Internal Controls

Maintain and observe HSBC internal control standards, implement and observe Group Compliance Policy, including the timely implementation of recommendations made by internal/external auditors and external regulators. Foster a compliance culture and implement Group Compliance Policy by managing compliance risk in liaison with the Head of Group Compliance, Regional Compliance Officer, Area Compliance Officer or Local Compliance Officer, ensuring adequate compliance resources are in place and training is provided.

Role Dimensions
Responsible for setting up a risk management team focused on Sustainability Risk, a new risk discipline for CMB. This team will help to formulate the risk management framework for this new area which is a strategic objective of HSBC and both LOBs
