The Role Responsibilities
  • A strong strategic consultant, one that serves both as an advocate and advisor, that will lead the development of the Bank's Innovation narrative and develop an internal and external communications strategy for telling the innovation story.
  • The Head of Innovation Communications will be responsible for enhancing the reputation of Standard Chartered as a leader and employer of choice for innovation by leading and developing integrated communications and activation strategies to tell the company's differentiated innovation story. This role will also be the partner to SC Ventures, working closely with the businesses on identifying and supporting the key initiatives that will deliver on the Bank's strategy, and aligning on the overall narrative.
  • Internal tactics could include communications to all Standard Chartered employees via Group channels, as well as working with CABM Partners to include in communications from the respective MT-level leader to their teams. External and executive tactics could include media relations, positioning and prepping executives as speakers on strategic topics internally and externally, and social media (LinkedIn) support for key senior leaders.
Strategy
  • Develop a holistic narrative for why innovation at Standard Chartered is a differentiator, with accompanying and frequently updated proof points to be used for internal and external storytelling.
  • Lead the development and implementation of measurable strategic communication plans that enable and deliver on the Bank's priorities and goals, building the Bank's reputation of being innovative.
  • Develop and project manage communication plans, taking ownership of strategy, socialisation and tactical execution - as well as outcomes and reporting.
  • Leverage an omni-channel approach to include owned, earned and paid communications, thought leadership and stakeholder engagement.
  • Operate with a global mindset to understand innovation developments relevant across the businesses, functions and regions/markets.
  • Partner with other Corporate Affairs, Brand and Marketing (CABM) teams e.g., CCIB, CPBB and Story Lab to leverage function expertise, find proof points and examples of innovation strategy, and to determine and train spokespeople to drive an external storytelling agenda that promotes Standard Chartered's innovation brand and reputation as a key area of differentiation.
  • Synthesise themes and issues from the external environment and surface risks and opportunities to your clients and other partners in CABM and throughout the Bank.
  • Serve as a trusted communications advisor to internal business partners and leaders.
  • Be a proactive and 'value-add' member of the TTO, Change and Innovations Communications leadership team and senior leader of the People & Culture Communications Leadership Team.
Business
  • Conceive, plan, manage and promote a messaging playbook for Standard Chartered's innovation and technology agenda - as well as global thought leadership program - and process for updates, to help grow the awareness and influence of the Bank's innovation agenda.
  • Focus on topics and trends that will help build the Bank's innovation reputation e.g. risk & security, digital, the future of banking, sustainability, fintech and fraud.
  • Help drive both day-to-day communications and high-visibility campaigns in support of the Bank's innovation strategy.
  • As the partner to SC Ventures, advise and partner on identifying the high-value and priority initiatives that support the delivery of the Bank's strategy; working closely with other CABM teams to drive an external storytelling agenda that promotes Standard Chartered's innovation brand and reputation as a key area of differentiation.
  • Build relationships with CCIB and CPBB partners, understanding and building the innovation story across the various parts of the bank Support the management and development of the Bank's strategy narrative, ensuring that tone and messaging of the Bank's innovation efforts are included and aligned.
  • Build a community of strong cross functional colleagues across our network, sharing information, aligning on plans and goals, and moving the communications agenda forward via strong business relationships.
  • Represent the CABM function as a senior trusted adviser; coaching and guiding members of your team to do the same.
  • Practice effective risk management, escalating issues when needed.

  • Accountable to risk control owners and/or Group policy owners for the implementation of policies and control standards set by them, ensuring compliance, and operating within risk tolerance and risk appetite and building a culture of good conduct.
People & Talent
  • Build and lead a team of strategic advisors comfortable with advising senior executives; planning, delivering and measuring strategic communications plans; and continue to develop capability and ensure delivery of short and longer-term objectives.
  • Ensure selected team members have strong verbal and writing skills.
  • Ensure the provision of ongoing training and development of people and ensure that holders of all critical functions are suitably skilled and qualified for their roles ensuring that they have effective supervision in place to mitigate any risks.
  • Employ, engage and retain high quality people, with succession planning for critical roles.
  • Lead through example and build the appropriate culture and values. Set appropriate tone and expectations from the team and work in collaboration with risk and control partners.

  • Identify, report and escalate issues, risks, business intelligence to leadership.

Our Ideal Candidate
  • 15+ years of solid communications experience, preferably with leadership, strategy and execution in external and internal communications.
  • A successful track record of advising senior management on how to effectively communicate, considering risks, opportunities, and the greater context of the company's strategy.
  • Experience in a financial institution or global corporation of setting and delivering proactive communications strategies.
  • Proven ability to work effectively in a cross-functional environment, representing communications team across various stakeholders.
  • Ability to think through desired outcomes of communications strategies and tactics.
  • Ability to identify potential reputation or culture risk from a function's strategies, programs or communications, and to raise these concerns effectively.
  • A track record in creating and developing content to support or enhance a strategy/narrative.
  • Understanding of internal and external content strategies and communications channels, including social media channels.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience in corporate communications, PR and/or journalism.
  • Flexibility to work in high-pressure environments.
  • Ability to develop effective and collaborative working relationships.
  • Experience managing multiple stakeholders, including senior management and third-party vendors, across multiple locations.
  • People management experience is a bonus.
  • Experience of dealing with the media is a bonus, as is issues management.
  • A professional qualification in a communications, brand or marketing related-subject, and/or membership of a communications professional body is a bonus.
